MAKING WAVES E-NEWS BRIEF: 18 DECEMBER 2021 – 01 JANUARY 2022

With a 52% fall in the number of piracy and armed robbery incidents in the Gulf of Guinea in 2020, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Assembly urged governments to continue to cooperate with and assist States in the Gulf of Guinea to develop their national and regional capabilities to improve maritime governance in waters under their jurisdiction. In response, the Governments of its 175 member states agreed to continue to support efforts to protect maritime trade in this region. International support for anti-piracy efforts in this region is vital to countries, such as India, which imports vast volumes of hydrocarbons from West Africa.
