The National Maritime Foundation (NMF) hosted Dr (Commander) Arnab Das (Retd), Founder of the Maritime Research Centre, for a Professional Education Lecture on Underwater Domain Awareness.
The session examined the distinctive challenges presented by India’s tropical littoral waters, where variations in the underwater acoustic environment can significantly affect sonar performance and maritime operations. Dr Das highlighted that such challenges extend beyond engineering and have important implications for maritime strategy, security, and policy.
The lecture covered a wide range of interconnected issues, including acoustic stealth, sediment management, biofouling, fisheries, and the geopolitics of underwater data. The discussion underscored the growing importance of developing a comprehensive approach to Underwater Domain Awareness in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific.
The technically substantive and policy-relevant interaction offered valuable insights into the relationship between underwater science, maritime security, the Blue Economy, and India’s wider strategic interests.
