Eminent Person’s Lecture with Dr Raj Kumar, Director NRSC, ISRO, DoS on 26 August 2021
The NMF regularly conducts its Eminent Person’s Lecture (EPL) on contemporary topics. The twelfth lecture – this year’s fifth – will be delivered by Dr Raj Kumar, Director, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, India (DoS), Hyderabad, from 1030 h to 1230 h (IST), on Thursday, 26 August, 2021. The topic of his talk is, “Indian Space-based Remote-Sensing – the Oceans and Society”.
Abstract:
The oceans are central to the continued existence of life on our planet covering approximately seventy percent of the Earth’s surface. Most of the livelihood of coastal population depends upon the ocean living resources. They also play a major role in the monsoon dynamics, predictions and in climate variations and there is a need for continuous and simultaneous observations at all points of the globe and as frequently as possible. Due to the vast oceanic areas, detailed, timely information of sufficient observational density across most of the regions are difficult. The best possible ocean state can be generated using the in-situ measurements, however due to vast extent of oceans; it is next to impossible to deploy in-situ instruments at each and every location. In view of the above, the spaceborne sensors are crucial for integrated ocean observation system with the major advantage of their high temporal repetivity and global coverage. These sensors make observations of various oceanographic parameters in different scales and these observations are assimilated in the numerical ocean models to provide ocean state prediction a few days in advance. In his talk Dr Raj Kumar will be discussing the various spaceborne sensors utilised for the Ocean Remote sensing, observation techniques and their applications in several domains of life for both coastal and open ocean regions with special emphasis on advancements in Ocean Remote Sensing in India.
