Strengthening Maritime Security in the Western Indian Ocean: Insights from Mombasa Workshop

A recent workshop held in Mombasa brought together representatives from over 20 countries, international organisations, and think tanks to exchange perspectives on maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean.

A key area of discussion was the operationalisation of the DCoC/JA Working Group 3 (WG3), currently chaired by Kenya, focusing on enhancing operational cooperation and coordination at sea.

Captain R S Sawan participated as part of the Indian delegation led by Commodore Nitin Parvataneni, with representation from the Indian Navy, Captain Arjit Pande, and Abhinav Sood of the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR).

During the workshop, India’s contributions to maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean were highlighted, particularly in the areas of operational deployments, information sharing, and capacity-building initiatives. The discussions underscored the importance of coordinated regional mechanisms and sustained international cooperation in addressing evolving maritime security challenges.

The engagement reflects India’s continued commitment to supporting stability, security, and collaborative frameworks across the Western Indian Ocean and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
