Design and Construction of Warships in India: NMF Professional Education Lecture

Under its Professional Education Lecture Series, the National Maritime Foundation hosted Sujit Baxi, Director General of the Warship Design Bureau, for a lecture on “Design and Construction of Warships in India.”

The session traced India’s journey towards achieving self-reliance in warship design and construction, highlighting the steady evolution of indigenous capabilities across platforms and systems. It underscored the role of innovation, institutional expertise, and long-term strategic planning in building a robust naval industrial ecosystem.

The lecture examined the transition from reliance on foreign designs to the development of advanced, indigenous platforms, reflecting India’s broader push towards defence self-reliance. It also highlighted the integration of emerging technologies and modern design practices in shaping future-ready naval capabilities.

Emphasising the strategic significance of warship design, the session underscored its central role in strengthening maritime security, enhancing operational readiness, and supporting India’s expanding role in the Indo-Pacific.
