COLLAPSING MARINE BIODIVERSITY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE BLUE ECONOMY – HOW YOU CAN HELP REVERSE THIS
The National Maritime foundation, New Delhi, and the Indian Maritime Foundation, Pune, are jointly organizing an online workshop on the subject of “Collapsing Marine Biodiversity and its Implications for the Blue Economy — How YOU Can Help Reverse This” on 20 July 2021, 1700-1900 h.
The on-line workshop on 20th July 2021 will be conducted by the highly qualified and highly motivated members of NMF, namely, Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan (Director General, NMF), Dr Pushp Bajaj (Research Fellow, NMF), Ms Sarita Fernandes (Research Associate, NMF).
Concept Note
The workshop aims to highlight the many ways in which accelerating climate change, overexploitation and mismanagement, and ever-growing marine pollution are transforming the marine biodiversity across the world’s ocean basins. The workshop will discuss the wide-ranging adverse impacts of the ongoing changes in the marine food-web on the Blue Economy of India and other coastal and island nations around the world, and how the young people can affect change and contribute towards building a sustainable Blue Economy that protects and preserves our planet’s incredibly rich ocean biodiversity. By the end of the workshop the attendees would have learnt:
- The multitude of ways in which climate change and other human interventions are changing the distribution of marine species in the world’s ocean basins.
- The socio-economic consequences of these changes in the marine environment for India and other coastal and island nations.
- The opportunities and mechanisms through which young citizens can contribute towards mitigating the human-caused stressors and conserving the rich ocean biodiversity.
The global ocean is and always has been essential to life on planet Earth. In fact, the ocean is where the very first life forms emerged on the planet. Even today, the world’s oceans basins support nearly all life on Earth either directly or indirectly. In the current world order, every coastal nation’s economy relies heavily on its surrounding ocean and the living and non-living resources within. The lesser appreciated fact, however, is that the oceans also regulate our climate, they are important components of the carbon cycle and the water cycle, and they are responsible for transporting heat across the planet through global water circulation patterns. The ongoing chemical and physical transformation of the oceans will have profound implications for marine life, Earth’s climate, coastal human populations, and ocean-based economies around the world.
A brief introduction of our organizations
The Indian Maritime Foundation (IMF) is a Pune based non-profit organization founded and run by a group of retired Indian Navy and Merchant Marine officers. The main objective of IMF is to promote awareness of the oceans and to rekindle maritime consciousness and pride among the people of India especially the youth. Besides this basic objective, the IMF is also committed to promoting awareness of and debate in all aspects of India’s maritime interests covering the developments in naval, geo-strategic, merchant shipping fisheries, as well as oceanographic and environmental fields. Participation
The workshop would have student participation from several schools and colleges from multifarious disciplines who are curious and dedicated towards the cause of protecting our planet. The workshop is designed for students above 16 years of age. The entire event will be hosted virtually on the CISCO-Webex platform. No fee will be charged for participation. A certificate would be provided on the successful completion of the workshop.
