Ms Devleena Bhattacharjee — Founder of Numer8, Sustainable Marine Ecosystem, Mumbai — spoke on the theme “Resilience of India’s Coastal Cities: People, Planet, Profit Towards Policies” in Professional Session Two – “Coastal Resilience: Analysing India’s Current Policy Framework” on Day Two of the Vice Admiral KK Nayyar Fellowship Conference 2023.

About the Speaker:

Ms Devleena Bhattacharjee is a data scientist with over 15 years of experience in using data to solve real-world business problems across different domains. Her first data science startup was a risk intelligence platform for the insurance industry, using satellite data. Her second data science startup, Numer8, uses satellite data along with other sensor data to build profitable, traceable, and sustainable fisheries. Ms Bhattacharjee solo founded Numer8 in 2017 and now works with a team of data scientists, data architects, and GIS analysts. Numer8’s OFish product is unique globally in creating social and environmental impact. It was selected by the European Space Agency and the UN World Food Programme for addressing SDGs 2, 12, and 14. OFish was also selected by the ISRO ANIC ARISE Program in 2021 to work to build an affordable and effective marine communication system for fishing boats, essential during search and rescue operations, and to keep them informed proactively on critical weather conditions. Currently, the Numer8 team is using ocean observation data to explore additional livelihood enablement of coastal communities like seaweed. Ms Bhattacharjee speaks actively about using the power of data science in solving global issues like climate change and food security. She is also the chairperson for the FICCI Fishtech subcommittee which helps her engage further with the sector and build interventions between multiple stakeholders.
