Dr Nabam Tunia
Bio - Profile
Dr Nabam Tunia is currently an Associate Fellow at National Maritime Foundation in the Indian and Regional Maritime Security (Japan) cluster. She holds a Ph.D. in international relations, from School of International Studies, Japanese Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. Her Ph.D. thesis, Discourse on Japan’s Maritime Strategy: A Case Study of Japan- Australia Strategic Maritime Cooperation 2007-2018, navigated Japan’s maritime strategy within the larger debate of Japan’s grand strategy, drawing a ‘comprehensive approach’ on military and economic security nexus. And the second half of the thesis analysed Japan’s strategic maritime cooperation Australia.
Her professional journey spans across research, teaching and corporate sector. She started as a research intern at NMF. She then went on to teach in the classrooms at Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan. She was awarded the Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship Program (2023-24) and was a visiting Researcher at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan, and is also a recipient of the National Fellowship for Schedule Tribe, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India. She has worked as a Geopolitical Risk Analyst at Max Security and was involved in the capacity of a Research Associate for an ICSSR funded project.
As a Japanologist, her area of interest lies primarily in Japan’s strategic and security studies and in her recent academic publications, she has delved into Japan’s vested interest in India’s Northeast Region, within the larger ambit of its FOIP vision.
