THE EMINENT PERSON’S LECTURE BY DR AMIT GUPTA OF USAF AIR WAR COLEGE
| The National Maritime Foundation in partnership with the Indian Maritime Foundation is organising an Eminent Person’s Lecture (EPL) by Dr Amit Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of International Security Studies, USAF Air War College, Alabama, USA, from 1800 h to 2000 h (IST), on Thursday, 12 August, 2021. The topic of his talk is “Maritime and Aerospace Domain Complexities of the Indo-Pacific: Reviewing Indo-US Cooperative Mechanisms”.
The past year has seen a flurry of activities that have catapulted India-US bilateral cooperation, in defence and security, to new highs. Even as the two nations signed the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) — the third and final foundational pact for deeper defence cooperation between the two partners, the navies of the two countries increased the tempo of their interactions through the conduct of several naval exercises in the Indian Ocean Region. The latest iteration of this partnership, under the ambit of the QUAD, will see the Indian Navy expand its reach in the Pacific Ocean, and thereby develop greater synergy and enhanced inter-operability with its like-minded partners. Abstract As India faces the challenge of an increasingly assertive China—both in the maritime and air spaces—it needs to implement two policy objectives. The first is to build up its maritime and air power to be able to successfully deter China. Secondly, its needs to work with other Quad countries to create a political and strategic alliance in the Indo-Pacific region. In both cases the United States could play a key role in building India’s capabilities. The lecture will cover how to build a naval and air force with the help of the US and the extent to which the Quad can be a military-security force structure.
