Admiral A K Chatterji was Chief of the Naval Staff from March 1966 to February 1970; he was the first Chief in the rank of Admiral in the Indian Navy. He joined the Royal Indian Navy in 1933 and saw action in World War- II.

Admiral A K Chatterji fellowship has been instituted by the family in memory of the late Admiral A K Chatterji to undertake research on maritime issues. The duration of the fellowship is 18 months and is offered to serving naval officers/ young Academics at the National Maritime Foundation, New Delhi.

Title of Research: “The Game Changer: Game Theory & Its Application to Anti-Piracy, Maritime Terrorism & LIMO”
Fellow Profile:
Cdr AP Golaya is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 01 January 1992. The officer specialized in Navigation, Air Craft Direction and Naval Operations. In addition to serving afloat in frontline warships including INS Mumbai and INS Godavari as the Navigating Officer, he has held a number of important appointments ashore. These include Joint Director Net Centric Operations at Naval Headquarters. He has also served as an instructor in Navigation and naval operations at the Navigation and Direction school Kochi, the officer has commanded three ships including one on deputation to the Coast Guard. As a part of his assignments, he has been involved in authoring/co-authoring a number of articles and has contributed extensively to five books on professional subjects, which have been widely circulated within the Navy. A keen writer and analyst, he did a short tenure as a Research Fellow at the National Maritime Foundation prior to taking up his current assignment as Defence Specialist in the National Security Council Secretariat.During his command of the Diving Support Ship, INS Nireekshak, the ship was awarded the coveted ‘Unit Citation’. The officer was awarded the Vishist Seva Medal for distinguished service on 26 January 2012.
