BIMSTEC: WHERE INDIA’S ‘NEIGHBOURHOOD FIRST’ AND ‘ACT EAST’ MEET

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation was established in 1997. Its members are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. On 11 August 2017, the 15th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting was held in Kathmandu. Addressing the meeting, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, “For India, BIMSTEC is a natural choice to fulfil our key foreign policy priorities of ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’..”
